Dietitians in Lebanon: how to choose and what to ask
This address once carried a directory of hundreds of Lebanese dietitians. Today we offer instead what someone searching actually needs: how to choose the right practitioner, how to get the most from the session, and where supplements fit in the plan.
A dietitian is neither a coach nor a doctor
A dietitian is a university graduate in nutrition science licensed to practise, who builds an individual eating plan from your health history, test results and habits. A fitness coach designs an exercise programme; a doctor diagnoses and treats. The three complement one another, but none replaces the others.
In Lebanon the profession is regulated and has a professional body; a licensed dietitian can show their licence or registration number on request. Do not hesitate to ask.
When you need a dietitian
- You want to lose or gain weight with a realistic plan that fits your kitchen and your work.
- You have a medical diagnosis — diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol, a kidney or gut condition — and the doctor asked for dietary changes.
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding, a child who refuses food, or a teenage athlete.
- You want to know whether the supplement you are considering suits you at all.
How to check before booking
- Ask about the university degree and the licence to practise.
- Ask whether they work with cases like yours (diabetes, athletes, children).
- Ask about the length and price of the first session and the expected number of follow-ups.
- Be wary of anyone promising specific, fast numbers, or selling their own products as a condition of follow-up.
What to prepare for the first session
- Recent blood tests if you have them (sugar, lipids, vitamin D, iron).
- A list of the medicines and supplements you take now — all of them, herbs included.
- A three-day food diary: what you ate, when and how much.
- Your goal in simple words, and what you tried before and why you stopped.
Where supplements fit in the plan
A good dietitian starts with the plate, not the capsule. A supplement is added when there is a specific shortfall or a goal that is hard to reach with food alone, and it is chosen by what its formula lists. This site shows the products available in Lebanon with their listed ingredients so you can discuss them with your dietitian instead of guessing.
What a consultation usually costs
It varies between private clinics, hospitals and university centres, and between Beirut and the regions. Ask about the price before booking, and about remote follow-up after the first session — many dietitians offer it and it costs less.
When you need a doctor, not a dietitian
Unintended weight loss, blood in the stool, excessive thirst and urination, chest pain, or any new persistent symptom — these go to a doctor first. The dietitian comes after the diagnosis, not instead of it.
